Change in Firefox default search coming in Ubuntu 10.04
Today it was announced by Rick Spencer of Canonical that there are changes coming to the default search engine in Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx. The first change is that the default search engine will no longer be Google. Canonical and Yahoo made a deal in which Canonical will generate revenue from the switch. This will help to support further development of Ubuntu by helping to pay for Canonical staff and other resources needed.
The second change is that the search bar on the default Firefox home page will now be the same as the search engine default for Firefox. This means that if you have Yahoo as your default search engine, the start page will be a Yahoo search bar. If you have Bing as your default search engine, then Bing would be your start page search bar.
You will of course be able to change your default search engine just as easily as you can change it now. The changes in the default search engine should be made within the next few weeks. If you are running Lucid like I am, you will notice these changes as soon as they are made. If you wait until Lucid is released to upgrade, then as soon as you upgrade, the new changes will be present.

Meh, I usually just change it to Wikipedia (en) for the default search as I’m setting things up.
I use Google as my homepage, so no big deal, it’s just a default.
My problem: I think it’s _very_ bad that an upgrade process modifies my settings from the previous version. At least I’ve read many blog posts today, that after ubuntu upgrade the search engine is not google anymore which was used in the previous version so many users think it’s _their_ settings/choice and and an upgrade does not have the right to modify. In case of a new ubuntu installation the process is different of course, then it makes sense that a default settings should have somehow …
I support this decision as it gives revenue which hopefully will help Linux get into the mainstream. Thinking outside the box, I like it. Google is my homepage as well, nice and simple.

But it doesn’t really. They treat it like any other setting changes in updates. If you use the previous default, you’ll get the new default. If you customized your search engine, that it will keep your customizations.
So, they are changing google to yahoo, because they don’t know if that’s your personal choice, or if you just never bothered to change the previous defaults.
They use the same policy for every default on your system. From pulseaudio defaults to theme defaults, etc.
